MGMT's opener is...

The Willowz, a garage rock band out of Anaheim California. I have never heard of them but thanks to the power of youtube I have discovered they definitely have that 70's rock feel with a little blues, soul and punk thrown in on various songs. I think they will compliment MGMT well with that old-60's psychedelic rock feel that MGMT has explored with Congratulations, which was officially released today.
I love the way this song picks up towards the end:

PS: SCOPE (or MUSO), if you're listening I recommend checking out the New Jersey punk band Titus Andronicus for a small and probably cheap Field House (or maybe even the GSR) show next year. They would be a great alternative to a rap show in the Whit, like Brand New was to Lupe last year. I feel like a small rock show and a Whit rap show have proved to please the most students.

Stay classy, not UMassy.

  1. Have you ever gone into scopes office to talk to them? It is well worth it to do so.

  2. As far as the Titus Andronicus deal - right now, MUSO would be smart to snag em. If SCOPE wants to continue their trend of booking acts before they get big (Maroon 5, Dane Cook, Jason Mraz), TA should be on their radar, maybe for an opener in the fall (if they ever get to pick one again). They made Rolling Stone as one of the top acts to watch in 2010.

  3. I haven't been to scope's office, but I actually recently met a member and talked about shows and their policies, tactics, etc.

  4. Regarding the second anonymous comment: you are fucking retarded if you think SCOPE, who got so much flack for bringing MGMT, would totally get Titus Andronicus. Do you really think that many people would be amped to get TA?

I'm not saying that I necessarily want a rap concert, but if SCOPE wants to stay an organization, they will get a rap concert to have people on their side again.

Also, Rolling Stone is and has been only useful as a jizz rag for the past five years. Being one of the top acts to watch is the equivalent of giving an athlete an award for best potential.

  6. Or, you could get 10 (I think) of your faithful readers organized, along with a willing faculty adviser, and form an ad hoc student org. Then hit up ORO for funding for your own show. Think of it, your own group and your own shows, with you staying behind the scenes as a still-anonymous puppet master.

  7. And of course ORO is going to just up and give ten random students the $5000 guarantee necessary for TA to consider a college one-off.
