How I trolled UMass without even trying

Just a short time ago someone posted a link to the UMass Meme Facebook page on the UNH page. Boy, was I surprised to see that their page ID photo was taken from this blog and was created by me. Here is a screen shot I just took:

And here is the post I wrote when I created that meme back in October.

I think this is just another example proving how much better, smarter, innovative and physically attractive UNH students are than UMass students. I trolled them without even trying! Bahahaha! This is just too easy. New Hampshirite for the win. Suck it UMass! And while I'm on that topic...

You Know You Go to UNH when…

By: All of us! And a few of Corey's roommates...

We have all seen these lists on Facebook so it was a surprise to us when we realized there was not one for dear old UNH. Needless to say we got together one night and brainstormed up a quick list. UNH is a pretty unique campus and we know this list could go on forever so feel free to share any we missed online. (Props to Lady Meow for the idea to do this.) Join the facebook group here!

You know you go to UNH when:
1. You’ve taken a suggestive picture with the Wildcat statue. (The Wildcat statue in front of the Whit makes for a perfect location for that new Facebook profile picture to show everyone how fun and creative you can be. Although, this spot just lost a lot of creativity points since we just mentioned it. Quick! Find something else to take a photo in front of before we write again!)
2. You're sick of being Umili-ated and called the University of No Hardware
3. You know that the UNH version of Hansel & Gretel is when you can follow a trail of pizza vomit from DHop to Madbury Road or Stoke.
4. You go to T-Hall beach even though there’s no water.(Every spring when weather begins to get warm students flock to Thompson Hall lawn to get in some much needed tanning and some new sport called “not swimming.”)
5. Classes are never canceled. (They would rather you become buried under snow, frigid from power loss, and paddle down Main Street in monsoons with your Kayak and lifejacket.)
6. When your two most famous alumni are as follows: The guy who hosted Global Guts and the first person who admitted to fucking Tiger Woods. (Go Wildcats!)
7. You can’t tell the difference between Sketched Out and Improv Anonymous. (Here is a hint. Sketched Out does sketch comedy. Improv Anonymous does improvisational comedy. Both are hilarious and really attractive.)
8. You have a love/hate relationship with Scope. (For every MGMT there is a Lupe Fiasco. Pick your side.)
9. When you have cut someone off on the Durham 500. (The one-way oval surrounding downtown, that makes for a perfect NASCAR track. Always remember: stay low on the corners and hug the outside on the straight-aways. )
10. You get police texts about hot dogs assaulting people. That’s an interesting text message to wake up to.
11. When you constantly go to frat parties, leave disappointed and comeback the following week anyways.
12. You feel a true connection with a specific librarian. *cough* David Severn *cough*.
13. On Fridays you have to navigate your way around 400 kegs of Keystone on Main Street.
14. Fuck Maine even though Massachusetts way more of a douche bag.
15. You’ve taken Nutrition 400 yet you still order cheesy fries from Kurt’s. (Oh, boy, do we ever!)
16. You get run over by a horse when the Red Sox win the World Series.
17. The main dining hall is considered one of the best in the country but you don’t have any salt. You do however, have $32 shakers that are hidden in the most inconvenient places possible.
18. When Making Babies is an actual class, but sadly, not a lab.
19. The sciences building always smells of road kill, rotting research, or general death. (Nothing scares away a Liberal Arts students like creating a morgue-like environment for your students!)
20. Someone tells you they live in the Greens and you immediately shudder.
21. You’ve been affected by a Stoke fire alarm. (Either you lived there and had to leave the building for hours at a time, or you have taken a Stoke refugee in for the night.)
22. When Bob Marley is an epic comedian.
23. You buy your fresh produce at the DUMP, and by fresh produce we mean beer.
24. Somebody serves alcohol in a sketchy basement and calls it an Irish Pub.
25. The best party of the night took place at Wildcatessen.
26. Thompson School and CAB…. Hahahaha.
27. God thanked your campus ministry by giving it antrax.
28. A certain convenience store accepts words of honor for ID.

A cut-down version will also appear in the newspaper Tuesday and there will be a facebook group for this so stay tuned.

UNH Study: No correlation between Social Networking and Sleep

Newswise — "How much sleep college students get each night is not affected by how much time they spend using Facebook and other social media, according to new research from the University of New Hampshire.
The study indicates that using social media is hardly what keeps students up at night,” said UNH adjunct professor Chuck Martin, whose marketing research class conducted the study. “Using Facebook, and to a lesser degree YouTube, blogs or Twitter, do not appear to have any impact on how much or how little students sleep.” (Read entire article here.)

This seems like a pretty interesting study, but I find it strange I was never polled during the research, I mean I am the premier campus blogger. That being said I still agree with the results. I spend a lot of time on various social networking sites (for my personal and blog use) and I still get plenty of sleep. What this study fails to answer is what is keeping these students up all night. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out, and this is college right? There are many different factors that keep students up into the wee morning hours such as studying, homework, reading, drinking, TV, movies, taxi driving and video games. Apart from finals weeks I bet video games are the real kicker. Anyone who has ever played the new Call of Duty games can attest to that. I don't have Xbox 360 or and fancy video game system, but I understand how addicting they can be.

Karma's a Bitch

Last May, just over a month after this blog was born, I received a facebook message from someone with the name "Mark W Huddleston." Obviously, I knew it wasn't the UNH president, but just some random student.  In this message the kid made fun of the blog, it was actually kind of funny because I could tell he took everything I wrote way too literally.  However, I will admit that in the beginning I had no idea what I was doing or what direction to go in. I actually saved this message, even though I ignored it's content. And am I glad that I saved it after coming across this article: (From seacoastonline.com click to see full story. And more from the Union Leader.)

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A recent University of New Hampshire graduate is facing misdemeanor criminal charges after police said he used the Internet to falsely claim he had beaten up a student on Halloween and impersonate the university's president.
Scott Holbrook, 23, of Manchester, was arrested Thursday after turning himself in, university police said Friday.
Holbrook also was charged with criminal defamation for allegedly identifying himself as University President Mark Huddleston in instant messages and Facebook postings that included "inappropriate and suggestive comments." Sgt. Steven Lee declined to elaborate, but described the comments as crass and inflammatory. He was charged with hindering apprehension, unsworn falsification and disorderly conduct for allegedly posting information online claiming responsibility for the attack that left a 21-year-old student seriously injured.

So this kid gets arrested because he made a fake facebook account claiming to be President Huddleston  and pretends to be the assaulter. I am not positive but I believe the AIM screen name was "unh," which has been around for a while. (Even before I started my blog I remember seeing that he left messages in different facebook groups such as the incoming freshman class ones.) Wow, nice life. I mean this is absolutely the greatest thing ever. I knew when I read his message that he was a little off, but I never would have guessed it would lead to something like this. Here are a few lines from the message he sent me last year: "first off, your blog is meaningless; as your opinion is shared by almost all of the other ignorant cavemen on our campus... the only people reading your blog are these indie faggots and other fat slobs who are interested in journalism... get your act together. you're only impressing nerds and scene kids. what a disgrace you are... you are so cliche, so stereotypical."

Hey dude, I hope you're happy. If you still read this, which I wouldn't doubt, congratulations. I hope that you have accomplished all of your intended goals. Does it make you feel cool to make fake facebook accounts to and make fun of people? Really, what did he think he would accomplish with that? I'm glad that he was caught because I read some of the things he wrote about the assault and he went over the line. I don't know if the charges will stick, but hopefully it will teach him a lesson.

The UNH advising system sucks.

I can't put it any simpler than that. Well, maybe I shouldn't go that far... but my advisor is absolutely terrible at advising and the secretaries in my major's department aren't any better. For the first time in blog history I'm admitting that I am only sophomore. Yeah, I started this as a freshman... I'm an arrogant bastard blah blah blah, I know. (Not really... ladies)
So anyways, I emailed my advisor over the weekend about setting up a meeting and she is yet to reply back. I feel like our advisors should try and be a little more communicative, especially at this time of year when students are stressing over finals and registration. If I recall from last year she treated me like a child and was extremely bitchy, so this actually doesn't surprise me. Last year she said right in front of me that she hates that she has to be an advisor and just wants to teach.
Anyways, back to my previous point. I already know what classes I need to take, what I want to take and what I can take and in the past these meanings have been pretty meaningless. So today I go into the department office and I explain to the secretary my situation. I ask her if I can get my RAC and time and she seems shocked and appalled by that question. Which angered me because I tried to schedule a meeting, it's not like I was being lazy or ignorant. She treated me like I had no idea what is going on and told me to fill out one of those registration first and second choices sheets and bring it back before she would give me my RAC. Those sheets are absolutely pointless and a waste of time to any student with common sense. I don't understand why we need to fill them out before choosing our classes on blackboard. Last year I only took one class I had on that list. I guess they come in handy for students who can't keep track of their requirements and pre-requisites, but we are in college so it shouldn't be that difficult. Anyways, I think this prompts the question of whether or not the UNH advising system (and maybe even registration system) needs to be changed.
Maybe not all professors within each department should be advisors. I know that some actually enjoy it and it makes it much easier for their students. Another thing that could be helpful would be if the entire registration times were moved up so students don't have to deal with that and preparing for finals. I know that at Maine all registration was completed a few weeks ago. I feel like it is very last minute and can be kind of hectic, especially if your advisor (like mine) doesn't respond to emails or honor their office hours. What the fuck? Really? She has office hours for 1 hour once a week and she isn't even there. Whatever, I know what I need to do and how to do it, it just seems that as a professor and an advisor she should be more available and at the very least reply to emails. It's not like she is sick or gone for an emergency, she is just being a bitch. (I know this because I asked the secretary who told me she was around earlier.)

But I'll end this with some good news. Over 800 people have already joined the facebook group asking for UNH to adopt a form a the Good Samaritan Law. A member of student senate, who is working on it already, contacted me and provided the group with a bunch of info. Hopefully this will generate some interest around campus, because the students can have an impact.

Good Samaritan Law at UNH

After talking with several friends today, we decided that a Good Samaritan Law would be excellent for UNH. The student senate has already discussed it and with your support we can make it happen! The students of UNH have the power to make a change. State funding is down, which means that our tuition makes UNH run. This means that we have the power. Join the facebook group to Bring a Good Samaritan Law to UNH. Making this a reality could save a life. If you oppose this idea think about this: students will not stop drinking if it fails, we already drink without it! So why not support it?

Think about it.

Find Some Assholes

I'm sure most of you have heard about the student who got randomly jumped and beaten unconscious on Halloween. I do not know this student, but random assaults have been an issue as of late at UNH. Show him your support being joining this Facebook group and hopefully it will not only assist in catching these immature douchebags, but also prevent these random and uncalled for acts of violence on campus. It is time for UNH to grow together as one and put an end to student on student violence.

Who Are You?

I really wanna know... who are these people who want to go home? I don't know about you but I have had more fun going back to August then I ever had in my life. This is fucking college!(I'm sorry that song is too true, except for the dollar a slice pizza... fuckin' DHOP.) How the fuck do people want to go home? This is not just at UNH either. Sign on to facebook, I bet about half your friends from other schools will have statuses like "2 more days and back in the 603!!!" or "one more final and then going home!!" I've tried to think of all the possible explanations and I still find it hard to understand why.
  • School work: I understand not wanting to do work, but in all honesty if you can manage your time well classes really aren't that hard. I get pretty good grades and I still have a lot of fun when I want. Plus I write a kick-ass blog. That takes a lot more time then reading a kick-ass blog.
  • Homesick: I find great joy in laughing at my friends who refuse to go to UNH because it is too close to home or too many kids from their high school go here. (I'm sure it is like this for you local state school if you aren't from New Hampshire.) There are a pretty good amount of kids from my high school here, but I hardly see any of them. UNH is not your high school part 2.
  • See Friends: For the most part my friends at UNH (yes I do have friends) are just as fun as kids from home.  I have hung out with most of my good friends from home on breaks or long weekends.
  • Food: Food at UNH is actually pretty good. You may not realize it but UNH dining is much better than at other universities. I have a few friends who have transfered to UNH from other schools and they love the food here. Stop taking it for granted.
  • Money: This is understandable because I am poor. I could get a job here but I would much rather write this than be flipping burgers at HOCO. When I'm home I'll probably spend more time working than I do in classes. Which means I will have less free time at home than at school.
  • Alcohol/Parties: Believe it or not, some people want to go home to party. I don't know about you but partying at UNH is infinitely better than back home. Also at UNH, providing you have sources, alcohol is readily available at all times. I know many people drink at home with friends on a regular basis but personally, the two circumstances don't compare.
That is all I can think of. I guess since I want to stay I had a hard time thinking up of reasons to want to leave.

I will be doing a quote of the day at the end of each days first post. Sometimes it will be a "Overheard at UNH" and other times it will be something I have read or heard elsewhere. Today's quote comes from an actual fortune cookie I opened at a restaurant.

"You may be hungry soon: order a take out now."
