Weekend Music Pick

I heard this song from my brothers while I was home this weekend and I think I've listened to it 10 times since I've been back at school already. Not your normal college music, but I'm digging it:

Lookin' Sharp

I have now realized that Wednesdays are definitely my busiest day of the week, even though I have more classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. That may sound weird, but timing and class type has everything to do with it. You may have noticed the new banner image, pretty sharp don't you think? Sadly, I can't take credit for it, well technically I can, but that is not my style. The photoshopping was done and emailed by friend of the blog and UNH senior Cam; and it has given me a great idea.

I highly encourage readers to send in any pictures they take around campus that would be Nonsensical appropriate. I can't guarantee that you picture will be used, but any pictures would be appreciated. So feel free to email me not just pictures, but also stories, or overheard accounts or whatever because I want this blog to be more appealing and not just about me. Once again the blog's email is: unhblog@yahoo.com. If I feel it is blog worthy I'll gladly post it and give the finder credit.

I don't have much time, but before I go I have a new song of the day for you. First off, let me say that I am a big fan of Andy Sandburg and I honestly think that he saved SNL from completely falling off the face of the earth. I know that you have probably all seen the "I'm on a Boat" video a thousand times, but I came across a version recorded by an A Cappella group from UC Santa Cruz and I was completely blown away by their ability to take a popular song and make their own while still sounding like the original. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did:

The Weirdest SOTD Yet

For today's song of the day I present to you "Top Drawer" by Man Man. They can be described as experimental, alternative, or psychedelic rock. Picture Freddie Mercury, Jim Morrison and Tom Waits making taking acid and forming a band... They were the opening act at a concert I went to (they had war paint and were tripping) and I didn't actually like them too much, but after I heard some of their studio works I started to come around.

I will have a post about UNH being left off another list (this time its a good thing) up later tonight; so stay tuned.

Today's Post

Last night I attended the first ever flash-dance at UNH. Hundreds of students gathered in the courtyard in front of the library for a 15 minute rave thing. A lot of people had fun and I think the organizers did a great job, but I was hoping to capture UNH students at their finest. Only after it was said and done nothing really happened. Overall I came away disappointed. The music wasn't loud enough and clearly not enough people were belligerently drunk. Secretly I hoping for a huge mob of students to march around campus, but I guess we'll have to wait for the Sox to win the World Series in the fall. It's too bad the NBA and NHL championships won't occur while we're in school. Apart from election night (OBAMA!!!) we didn't have one good mob all year. Common! How do you expect to regain that top 10 party school ranking if we can't even have one legit mob? Jeez, kids these days... 

I was scanning over the Wikipedia page for "May 13th" looking for a musician's birthday or death  for inspiration for a song of the day and I saw that today is Ronnie "Lightweight" Coleman's 45th birthday. For those of you who don't spend your study time on youtube, Ronnie "Yeah Buddy" Coleman is an eight time Mr. Olympia, but he is perhaps even more famous for his youtube videos of him pumping himself up for a heavy lift. This is one of my personal favorites. I did hear that comedian/youtube sensation Bo Burnham will be appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight, meaning that I may actual enjoy the show for a few minutes. (I'm sorry, i just haven't gotten into Fallon yet, although he is getting better. I usually watch clips from the show on Hulu, mainly just to see the Roots.) (<-- Great song.) 

Seeing as how I have already used a Roots song I have decided to  use one of Burnham's for today's song of the day. I hope this will make you laugh and ease some of the tension during your finals. 

That's it for now, I to got to study for a change. I apologize for being brief but I have my hardest final tomorrow and it also happens to be the only one I need to do really well on. I'm pretty sure I've already mentioned to never take Politics 401.

Finals Week Preview

Well it is that time of the year again. Finals here at UNH begin Thursday, which means our lives will be dedicated to reading, studying and cramming for the next few days. If you're looking for something to ease the stress of finals week head over to the lower quad at midnight tonight to see the final show of the year for improv anonymous. According to my inside sources they expect it to be a great show and turnout. That is not all of the late night festivities here at UNH this week. Tomorrow night there will be the first ever flash dance at UNH. At approximately 11:45pm the music and strobe lights will be queued for a 15 minute dance in the courtyard in front of the library. Over 1,000 students are expected to attend, but now that I have announced that I will go I'm guessing at least 5,000 will show up. It sounds like it will be really fun and it will be cool to be apart of the first one ever here at UNH. Go have fun and study hard these next few days because summer is rapidly approaching and I guarantee after a few weeks being home you will be dying to come back. 

As a side note, today happens to be the birthday of Eric Burdon, formerly the lead singer of The Animals. In honor of Mr. Burdon, todays song of the day is the Animals rendition of the old blues song "House of the Rising Sun." Is it just me or is this one creepy music video?

This Day's Song of the Day in History

Today's song of the day also includes a quick history lesson. On May 4th 1970 the students at Kent State University in Ohio held a protest over the United States invasion of Cambodia during the Vietnam War. The protested resulted in the Ohio National Guard shooting into the crowd, killing four students. Nine other students were injured, some who weren't even protesting. The situation is clearly described in the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song "Ohio."

Monday Week Preview

Just a quick post today, I want to briefly touch on a few topics. First of all I got some bad news. It seems as though another year has passed where I went undrafted by all the NFL teams. It appears as though I will have to submit a player application to the UFL. I was pretty disappointed after watching all 15 hours of the draft this weekend without hearing my name called. It was a surreal moment, and I guess I will have to look elsewhere to become a millionaire. The good news is that both the MLB and NBA drafts are coming up in June, so I have my fingers crossed. 

You all may be unaware that Thursday April 30th will be the one month anniversary of the University of Nonsensical Happenings.  I just finished up my multi-media project to reminisce on the past month. Hopefully it will draw out a few laughs, and maybe even a few tears. I will promise you one thing, it is fucking epic but it should not be taking to seriously. You will have to wait until Thursday though to enjoy it and all it's glory. 

I just learned that the UNH annual Blue/White football game will be played on May 9th. That should be a good preview for the fall. Hopefully the team will continue with their upward trend they have experienced over the last five years or so. 

Also there is a new UNH blog in circulation that seems to encourage some of the same activities as I do. It's pretty entertaining, check 'em out UNH-Hi-Lites.

Fuck Yeah Friday

Welcome to the debut post of "Fuck Yeah Friday!" It's warm, the sun and shining and the Sox take on the Yankees tonight at Fenway. Oh yeah, and it's a fuckin' Friday at UNH! It is time to party hard, we need to step up if we want to get back into the top 10 party schools. It's up to you to make the change. I hope to see you at DHOP tonight, singing loud and dancing awesomely. I'll probably be there, this may be your once chance to spot the New Hampshirite in action. 

Readers, I just realized that our one month anniversary is rapidly approaching! You can expect an awesome and corny "look back" post which will be the first of hopefully many multimedia posts.

Weekend Update

Sorry that this post is coming so late. I slept in to approximately 12 today, only getting out of bed to watch the Celtics. Then I wasn't in the mood to post, not because they lost, but because I was still a bit hungover. Last night, I drank vodka in my room by myself... I mean... I went to that sick party those kids in my History class were talking about.

I regret to inform you that do to unseen circumstances I will not be able to post my research on UNH students until probably next weekend. I'm not quite finished and I want to it to be fully complete when I do publish it. 

Fuck yeah! Bruins just scored to go up 2-0!

Speaking of Boston sports, what's up with the Celtics losing today? Apart from Rajon Rondo I was very disappointed with their performance today. Come on guys, it's "We not me." I need to give props to Derrick Rose, he definitely didn't look like a rookie today. At least the Celts kept it close, unlike the Yankees who lost 22-4 to Cleveland today. 

Damn the Bruins are fucking dirty. Speaking of dirty, here is the song of the weekend. I need to give credit to the folks at RBM, they used this song a while back and it has quickly increased its play count on my itunes. It is an oldie by a band that, sadly, most of you probably haven't heard of. "Dirty Old Town" by the The Pogues.

Incase you haven't noticed I added a twitter application. If you're on twitter you should probably follow me. Also, I have gotten a few friend requests on facebook, but I know or at least hope, that there are more of you. By the way I didn't get stuck in Stoke like I thought I would. Due to the fact that there may be stalkers on here I'm only going to say that I'll be living in the Upper Quad next year. 

I'm pretty excited, the University of Nonsensical Happenings just recently recorded its 1,000th visitor. Let's make a deal. You all tell one friend about the site and as a reward I will start posting things that don't suck.

Thursday Thoughts

Happy thirsty Thursday my fellow Nonsensical Happenites. I want to start this post off by expressing my concern about something. What the fuck is wrong with kids who think its cool to pull the fire alarm at 4 fucking 30 in the morning? Are you still in high school you immature piece of shit? Over 400 people were forced into the freezing cold for about 20 minutes this morning because of your stupidity. Then we had to listen to a firefighter explain that it had to be a resident or a resident's guest because the doors are locked and you need a card to gain access to the building. Really dude? I never realized that only dorm residents can get in after 10pm. (That was called sarcasm.) Another thing that has pissed me off is the campus housing for next year. I was looking at the room checklist yesterday and I noticed that the Mills are completely filled and there are only like 12 rooms available in all the SERCS combined. Tonight SCOPE presents Guster, at 8pm at the Whittemore Center. I bought a ticket to the show because it was only 5 dollars but I'm probably not going to go because I can't pick my housing until 7:20. Look out Stoke, "Here I Come."

Fucking Jimmy Fallon. He ruined that song for me. Seriously the Roots are the only good thing about Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. I know that he is trying but he just wasn't made for late night. It's not his fault, just whoever hired him should probably be lobotomized like John F. Kennedy's older sister. All-American family? Really?

Weekend Update

Hello fellow students and whoever else reads my awesome blog. I hope you are all enjoying your weekend, happy holidays to those who are celebrating. It was a stange last few days at UNH, during the week the campus was over crowded with parents and high schoolers on tours and then Friday night it turned into a ghost town. I probably won't be posting anything until Sunday night or maybe even Monday, but hang tight I have a few pieces in the works. This upcoming week is looking like I'll be very busy with family and school stuff, so my postings may slow down for a few days. Although it seems I always find time to write anything urgent if I feel it is necessary to do so. So, have a good weekend whether your home or at campus. Stay tuned and tell your friends! Thursday Thoughts

Hello readers, hope your week has gone well thus far. I have a few things I'd like to briefly cover. First off, there is a good chance I'll be attending "Theatre Sports" tonight at 9pm in the basement of the MUB. A good friend of mine is one of the performers and I like to attend now and again to show my support. TS is always good for a laugh and it is a great, and healthy, way to spend an hour on a Thursday night. As I sit here listening to my ipod on shuffle the song  Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd came up, I figure that would be a good song of the day choice:

Also, I've been informed to keep an eye out for the "Thumbs Up" section in The New Hampshire, let's hope something good happens to help promote the site. 

I would like to take this time to wish my condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Nick Adenhart, who passed away this morning after a car accident. Adenhart was only 22 years old. 

In other sports news sources have said that Fenway Park in Boston will be hosting next years NHL Winter Classic. It is expected that the Bruins will play fellow "original six" team, and rival,  Montreal Canadians on January 1st 2010.

Song of the Day

Today in my history class our professor lectured about the Beat generation of the 1950's. She mentioned the 1953 Marlon Brando movie "The Wild One" in which Brando plays the head of a motorcycle gang called the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. She also spoke of the famous poem "Howl" by Alan Ginsburg. Where I am going with this? Today's song is "Ain't No Easy Way" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club off their 2005 album "Howl." How do you like them apples?

15 years ago today Kurt Cobain lay dead in his home in Seattle, Washington, but his body would not be discovered for another three days. April 5th, 1994 will be known as "The Day the Music Died" of our generation. Cobain was a legend, and his life was tragically cut short because of his heroin addiction. In his suicide note he claimed that he felt guilty for not feeling excited when he took the stage, and that the fans deserved better. I decided to go with three songs of the day today in remembrance of this great musician. The first song is "Lithium" by Nirvana. I was tempted to put up "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which is considered to be Nirvana's best song, but I decided against it because Nirvana hated how it was always requested by when they made TV appearances. 

The next video is from "Nirvana MTV Unplugged" which was filmed just five months before Cobain's death. This was considered to be one of the best unplugged concerts ever. It displayed Nirvana's true musical ability that many critics never knew they had. During the final song,  "Where did you Sleep Last Night," written by Lead Belly, Cobain foreshadows his suicide with the facial expression of a lost child. Watch his eyes and face from about 3:59 to 4:01 and you will understand what I am saying. 

The final video I have is Neil Young's "Sleeps With Angels" which came out shortly after Cobain's death. In Cobain's suicide letter he quoted another Neil Young song writing "It's better to burn out than to fade away."

Happy Wednesday everybody! To celebrate "hump" day I was tempted to pick "My Humps" by Fergie as my song of the day. But I decided to pick music instead. Today's song of the day is "Street Fighter" by the underground alternative rock group Dusty Rhodes and the River Band. I chose this in honor of the kid I saw get punched in the face at D-HOP last Saturday night. I got to give him props for getting back up quickly because he got hit hard! Enjoy and have a good day of pranks.
