A Message from Gnarlz

After last night's basketball game, where UNH beat Binghamton, I got a facebook message from Gnarlz that read "I think you should write a story about the students that came to Lundholm Gym tonight and took their free t-shirt at 6:30 pm and left the Field House before the team even came up for warm-ups. Wow. Thought our students were better than that." The is one of the worst things I have ever read. Talk about being disrespectful to the team. People who did that don't deserve to wear UNH colors and they also missed out on a great game. I mean that is like BC Superfraud low. In a follow up message Gnarlz wrote "Next Wednesday is WHITE OUT LUNDY and we need all of our students to come out, wear their white, and help us BEAT MAINE. GO 'CATS!" Now, I've never really been sure what to think of Gnarlz, I mean he is like the combination of  Jose Canseco  and the Phillie Phanatic. And he kind of looks like a shark. He also refused to answer some interview questions for me, probably because I enquired about his use of steroids and his connections to Tiger Woods.
Seriously, we know your on the Juice. Just come clean.

All allegations aside Gnarlz is the best mascot in Hockey and and America East. No other mascot comes close in ferocity and passion.

Also, I just got a chicken burrito from the new taco truck on campus. It was very delicious and today only you get a free monster with a burrito. The burrito was much bigger than I expected and everything in it was very fresh. The lettuce and tomatoes still had that little fresh crisp and it didn't get soggy or gross. The chicken was hot and it had a little spice to it, but you can also get hot sauce if you like. I talked with the guy for a few minutes and he's really hoping that word of mouth will help promote their services around campus. He is currently only here during the weekdays, but if the sales go well he will be able to come on weekends and stay later for nights. I told him he would do great with the late night crowd and that Kurt's (where the hell has Kurt been anyways?) and DHOP could use some competition. I would highly recommend checking out Irie Taco if you get a chance. Have a good weekend all.

UNH Mascots: Behind the Fur

The UNH Athletic Marketing Department is looking for some students to take over the duty of wearing the mascot uniforms for next year. Both Wild E. Cat and Gnarlz are in need of a new human to possess. However, be aware that if you are selected to be Gnarlz it is expected that you take steroids. The try-outs will be held
Wednesday May 6th from 6pm- 8pm in room 330 at the MUB. The department is looking for students who are enthusiastic towards UNH athletics and are overall outgoing and friendly. Maybe you're going to be a senior and you want to add a little flair to your last year at UNH? Or maybe you're an incoming transfer student who already looks like a cat so you figure why not? Any student at UNH is encouraged to try-out. I would love to be the next Wild E or Gnarlz but I feel like it would be frowned upon if Gnarlz showed  up to hockey games smelling of vodka.

Always remember:

"The Wildcat"

The University of New Hampshire was first established in 1866, originally being known as the “New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts” in association with Dartmouth College. In 1893 the Durham campus opened, but it was not until 1926 that the school adopted the “Wildcats” as a nickname. Before then the hockey team was called the “Durham Bulls” but it wasn’t the official school mascot. In 1926 the school newspaper, The New Hampshire, had a student vote in order to choose an official mascot. The “Wildcats” barely beat out “The Durham Bulls” for the title. Other names that received votes were the eagles, huskies, and the unicorns. Thank god that we’re not the “Unicorns” or I would not be a student here. People argued that the “Wildcats” fit the school well because it is “small and aggressive” like the hockey team was at the time.  Another argument was that a live wildcat would be much easier to transport than a bull. So there you go, the wildcat was chosen as the school nickname partially because it would accommodate having a live animal. I think that it is a shame that the school no longer has a live mascot, it is a disgrace to our rich past.

Until next time. Tell you friends.

What the UNH Football Program Needs

What is one thing that many big time college football schools have that we don't, other then a suitable stadium, that is?

A live mascot! I am proposing a plan for the University of New Hampshire to purchase a live mascot. Throughout the history of UNH athletics there have been four live mascots to grace Durham with their presence. The fourth and final mascot died in 1940 and since then we have only had the wonderful Wild E. Cat and the newly added Gnarlz. However, because of the recent steroid allegations filed with Gnarlz I believe it is time that our university add a live wildcat to the sidelines. Many major college football teams have live mascots such as The Georgia Bulldogs "Uga" and The University of Southern California Trojans "Traveler."
The first live mascot here at UNH was "Mazie" who was captured on a farm in Meredith in 1927. Mazie remained the mascot until she died in 1929. The second mascot was "Bozo", who first was bought in 1932, but went missing the next year and was never seen again. In 1933 the third live mascot, "Butch III" was purchased and served as a living mascot longer then all the others. In 1939 Butch III was stolen the day before a football game against Harvard and was later found in a garage in Woburn, Massachusetts. Butch III was retired after the incident. The fourth and final live mascot was Butch IV who died after only a week on the job in 1940. Since then UNH has been without a live mascot.
I think that it is time for UNH to purchase a new live mascot in hopes of rejuvenating the sport fans here at UNH. I attended many football and hockey games, along with a few basketball games and other sports events, and overall I was pretty disappointed with the enthusiasm from the student sections. Even at many of the hockey games, student fans were quick to turn their back on the team if they were playing poorly. This type of "fare-weather-fan" attitude is not acceptable for a student section. I believe that a live mascot, along with a new football stadium, would help attract more highly touted football student-athletes and it is something the school should look into if they want to continue the upward trend with the recent success of the football program.
