Toronto Maple Leaf and North Dakota Fans Cheating in Hobey Baker Voting

That is right, Toronto Maple Leaf and North Dakota fans are cheating in the Hobey Baker fan vote. Some of you may have noticed that only a handful of players have received a percentage of votes on the fan voting ballot, yet over 46,000 votes have been cast. Seems a little fishy, no? That is because commenters on a Toronto Maple Leaf fan blog have found ways to boost votes for North Dakota Sioux and Maple Leaf prospect Matt Frattin, who holds 63% of the vote. While Frattin is a great player it is weird to see that many Hockey East players like UNH's Paul Thompson, BC's Cam Atkinson and Maine's Gustav Nyquist have received 0% of the vote. (Especially when I know for a fact that Thompson has received many votes thanks to this blog and readers. Keep voting ONCE a day like the rules clearly state!)

The Hobey Baker committee NEEDS to fix this problem, a large part of the Hobey Baker is sportsmanship on and off the ice. These fans are doing the exact opposite of that.

Individual Maple Leaf and North Dakota fans have literally casted hundreds of votes in a matter of minutes.  Look at these screen grabs: (click to enlarge)

Good thing fan voting only counts for a tiny percentage. Hopefully this all gets sorted out so all the deserving players get their fair share of the vote percent.

Stay classy, not UMassy  Maple Leaf and North Dakota fanny.

  4. I always thought your school was called the University of No Hardware not the University of No Humour.

Any public voting like the one the Hobey Baker award set up is a joke. Just like the NHL All-Star game voting. It's just a way to drive traffic and the votes always get discounted. No need to cry over some harmless hijinks.

    Anonymous 1 - You're a douchebag.
    Anonymous 2 - You're right.

  5. p.s. 'Stay Classy'? Jesus wept. Next you'll be clutching your pearls to your chest and fainting at the thought of online ballot stuffing.

  7. about half the people on that blog are American, thanks for coming out.
Maybe you should blame the flawed voting system?

  8. ahh haha, The Sioux have one of the biggest fanbases in college hockey and Toronto has the biggest NHL fantasy, so it's not that hard to believe that Frattin is running away with the voting.

He deserves to be considered so I don't see what the problem is.

You're just mad that you are the University of NO HARDWARE.

  9. How about exploitation, not cheating. Voting system is flawed. If the ones in charge can't do something as simple as actually make it so you can only vote once (IP Adress cap 1 vote from each IP? No, too difficult? Ok, lets move on..) then they deserve to have the system exploited.

Leafs fans just having a little fun. Whoever is supposed to win will win, don't worry about it :)

  10. Haha this is a joke. The award shouldn't be handed out this way at all and if it is, people should have obviously realized this would happen with any big hockey market. Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, but probably not Ottawa :P

  11. ps: just like yale fans you like the little highlight of unh beating nodak... maybe they should hang a banner for that. Up in North Dakota we hang banners for national titles... 7 of them.

  12. Whoa that was a rush of comments. Thanks for the page hits guys!

Anyways, the only reason I posted this was because people couldn't figure out why players from their teams (not just UNH) weren't getting any votes. I know the fan voting really doesn't matter, but I wanted to let others know what was going on and make the source of the problem known. Obviously I did that.

Alright, I'm done. I have better things to do then to get in a pissing match blog war.

  13. Isn't the Hobey Baker partially based on sportsmanship? All those "fans" are just being ignorant and immature. Hobey must be rolling in his grave!

  14. If the Maple Leafs were any good this wouldn't be a problem. Since they are horrible, for at least the 5th year in a row they have nothing better to do. If my team was sitting 12th and 12 points out of the 8th seed I might be doing the same thing. Sad really.

  15. oh man, THE UNIVERSITY OF NO HARDWARE?!? These maple leaf and north dakota fans are so creative, I've never heard that one before...

At least Maine fans come up with new stuff now and again.

gimme a break. these leafs fans are probably a bunch of overweight, single 30 somethings who are too fat to even play in their local men's league.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ah yes, as the Maple Leafs (Leaves? who cares, they're still an incredibly irrelevant team regardless) have won what since 1967?

Go throw some more waffles at your terrible team that makes the Detroit Lions look competent.

  20. Hey Maine dude. Early season results mean what? Oh yeah, nothing! I'll bet my right leg Maine does nothing in the NCAA's... if they even get there.

Agreed they mean nothing in the long run - Ask any UNH fan they know better than any of us.

have fun living without a real right leg

  22. Like a "fan vote" actually will have a say in the final outcome. Get serious, people.

Only upset cause it got noticed perhaps?

  26. lol at some of these comments... its a friggen student blog about UNH some ppl need to relax... also, this blog usually gets decent comments, its just been slow over winter break...

  27. @happiergilmore: How many have they won since 1967? Now how many of the other Original Six have one at least one Stanley Cup since then? All of them thanks to the Blackhawks winning last season. Keep on clutching to championships that probably happened before you were even born.

  28. Maine Guy has a point but UNH will do it this year. GO UNH!

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Rusty: How original. How long did you have to study to come up with that one?

    ReplyDelete
  30. They're clearly still upset about the comeback in 2009. Wow. You nerds figured out a way to rig the system. Kudos. You want a gold star?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Again, people, fan voting only counts for 1% of the total process. Also, if a group of people are casting that many votes for a player of their choice, why don't you just do the same thing?

    ReplyDelete
  32. LOLLERBLADEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Its the websites fault and they are the ones that need to fix it. Not that the fan vote really means anything. This makes me laugh though, how mad people are getting that their person isnt leading the % vote. Sound like a bunch of Crosby crybabys.

    Cry Moar

    ReplyDelete
  33. Its not about leading the vote, its about players getting recognition from their fans for their hard work and production on the ice. Yeah, the fan vote barely counts, but its a way for fans to show their appreciation for the players. Its hard to do that when a bunch of people vote, but it still shows "0%" because certain people abused their voting by basically hacking the links and hitting the refresh button 5000 times.

  34. How many titles does UNH have? How many does North Dakota have? You can start talking bad about North Dakota hockey when you get within 6.

    ReplyDelete
  35. ^cause that totally changes everything, at least we'll still have our mascot next year

    ReplyDelete
  36. UND does not have a mascot. If you want to try and poke fun atleast try and be accurate.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I stand corrected, you shouldn't turn this into an investigative blog...you should turn it into a hockey blog!

    ReplyDelete
  38. what kind of NCAA D1 sport team doesn't have a mascot. What a joke

    ReplyDelete
  39. UND has won a championship or two, though bear in mind, they still have to live in North Dakota.

You can make fun of UNH not having trophies all you want but the simple fact is that with all those trophies you have, you keep them in North Dakota. A state so boring that getting to Montana is an upgrade. A state so frigin insignificant that the movie Fargo couldn't even be bothered to be filmed in Fargo. A state so pointless that you need to be judged by have a state to the South named literally the same thing.

Tell me North Dakotans, when was the last time you ever got within 500 miles of a city with more than 100,000 people in it?

So go ahead and make fun of UNH not winning the championship and choking every year, when you log off you will still live in North Dakota, and we will not. We win.

    ReplyDelete
  40. mascot/team name, doesn't matter what you want to call it cause you're losing yours next year...maybe you could change it to 'fighting sue' to be more politically correct and truly validate the claim that 'sioux/sue's a girls name'

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yes we keep them in North Dakota. The state with the best economy in the United States. With one of the largest oil finds in recent history and well within 500 miles of cities with 100,000 people in it. Nice try though, perhaps read watch the news and learn a bit about geography and distances instead of wacking it to miley cirus Youtube videos all day long.
