Sunday Shout-Outs

Okay so I've been away from the blog longer than usual, but I've had a couple of crazy days. My colloquium class is keeping me super busy and weekend nights... well, you can probably guess. I've been meaning to do a couple hat tips or shout outs for a while now, so I figured I'd get them all done at once. I usually don't do posts like this, but these are a few things worth mentioning, plus I know the people involved read this blog and I like to show appreciation to all the readers out there.

First and foremost, Vahalla (the "Party at UNH" kid) recently released his newest mixtape "There is no Mixtape" after there almost wasn't a mixtape. Days before it's original release date over the summer his car was broken into and his laptop was stolen. He was able to recover a few files from emails and his friend's computers, but seven tracks are still missing, three will never be the same. You can download it for free here and I think although it is shorter it shows more variety then his last mixtapes. It ranges from pop to hip-hop and even a little dubstep. Several other UNH and former UNH students are featured on different songs.

Secondly, the boys from NEWD films have released a new short. Personally, it doesn't measure up to the satire of "white and ghetto" (my favorite of all their shorts) but it is still good for some hard laughs. They look into the dangers and life troubles of planking:

Third, I got to give some credit to the ladies over at "Her Campus UNH." Her Campus is a national blog with different chapters for dozens of colleges written by college girls. It is obviously tailed to girls, but I know I have many female readers. They specialize in lists and tips type posts and also feature a weekly campus celebrity and cutie. Might want to keep you eye on that one... the celebrity one that is...

I can't go another post without giving a shout out to Clementos Pizza and Brew. They have good food and while it might be a tad more expensive then the other bars, it is rapidly becoming my favorite spot on campus. Every time I've been it has started out slow, but it does get pretty busy. They have daily specials like the other bars, but friend them on facebook to hear about all of them ahead of time. The other night I was there for about an hour and I played three songs on the jukebox. Absolutely took the place over, or at least I thought I did. Let's just say all three songs turned the bar into a drunk sing-along of epic proportions. I don't think there was a soul in there who didn't belt it out to "Wagon Wheel," "Build Me up Buttercup" (Yeah, I went there) and "Fuck You."

And a final shout out to the kid I over heard in D-Hop the other night, just laying it all on the line trying to hit on this girl:

Girl: Are you a freshmen?
Guy: Nah, I'm a sophomore.
Girl: Oh, where do you live?
Guy: Williamson.

Buddy, you're doing it wrong. You may give him the benefit of the doubt that he was an RA, but let's say he didn't seem to give off that impression.

I'm a senior... ohhh crap.

So I just took my last final and I'm officially a senior. Oh man, I don't want to be a senior. College can't end... I've been packing and cleaning all afternoon and I'm hitting the bars soon with a few friends before heading back. Check these new UNH produced videos. NEWD films (White and Ghetto and V-Card) is back and Valhalla has a new music video out.

Crosswaphobia, it's a bitch:

And a new music video from UNH's own Valhalla with Evin Baird.

iPads and Valhalla drops a mixtape

I have a few quick things I would like to briefly touch on that I think some readers may take interest in. The first thing is that I spent a few minutes playing around on an ipad today at the UNH computer store. Overall I was pretty unimpressed and even if I had the money I wouldn't buy one. It was nice to browse the internet and to read websites. I actually read an article from the New York Times about ipads on an ipad. The main thing that turned me off  was how annoying it was to type, it just felt uncomfortable. I think there is great potential with ipads or slate computers for serious bloggers or journalists, but the keypad needs to be reformatted. I couldn't picture having to write more than a few sentences in comfort. It is basically like a big ipod touch and I have to agree with all the reviews I read: It is great for accessing material, but it is terrible for creating material. Maybe in a few years when they rework the keyboard, add a few different options and drop the price I'll be interested, but I see no real constructive use in an ipad. I am just fine with a laptop that can do so much more with greater ease.

The second thing is that UNH's own Nick Wisse or "Valhalla" released a mix tape over the weekend. You can get it as a free download here. Considering he mixed and recorded the entire thing in his dorm room it is pretty impressive. (I want to make it known I have never met Nick, I just want to support an up-and-coming UNH artist. If you are a UNH student and want to get your music or product out - email me. If I like it, it will probably end up on the blog.) The mix tape is entitled "Approved Vol. 1" and has nine tracks including an intro and outro. I have listened to it twice and it seems as if everyone I talk to picks a different song as their favorite. I think I still like "Drop 'em" the best, but it is pretty well rounded. He has some nice lyrics and rhyming ability over mostly drum and synthesizer effects, so with some better production he isn't too far from a solid album. As a mixtape this definitely gets the job done, it shows people what he can do if they give him a chance. Definitely check that out, because it would be nice to see a UNH student make it.

Another thing I wanted to mention was that last week I drank with my RA, and that was pretty cool. I definitely would not have expected that to happen at the beginning of the year.

Also, I almost shot myself in the face today from so many "pink hatters" talking about the Red Sox game. Pink Hatters fair-weather-band-wagon Boston fans who first appeared after the Patriots Superbowl in 2001 and grew larger after the Sox World Series in 2004. We'll see if you still like/follow baseball in July and August. Pink Hatters are known to only follow baseball in April/May and September into the playoffs.

Let's Do This

Alright listen up UNH, I currently have two goals.
1) To have as much fun as possible during these last weekends before summer. To get you pumped up here is an epic collection of Beirut dunks.

Please, if you have the technology and the ups send me your own video submissions. I would love that so much. If you do you will be crowned blog reader of the year and possibly win a prize. (Maybe). It is currently a tight race and this could be a chance for a true dark horse to come up big. Just make sure that I can tell it is at UNH, meaning a shirt, logo or any UNH identifiable image. Or you can just say it on camera. I will try my best to try and capture a few by years end, maybe even my own, but no promises.

My second goal is to get UNH's own Valhalla to open for Sam Adams. I have no idea if Adams, or Barstoolpalooza has their own opener, but we're going to try. I have never met Valhalla, but he is the man behind "Drop 'em" and "Party at UNH" which can be heard at almost every campus party or dorm room. So I am asking my readers to go on the event page for the Sam Adams show and request Valhalla to open, I know several already have. You even email "El Prez" from Barstool and request it if you want. UNH students came up big to get Adams in the first place, so why can't we get our own local opener?

UNHers I am counting on you to help make this happen. So remember:

1) get drunk.
2) get a camera and a crappy Beirut table.
3) film your best (or worst) dunk attempt.
4) email me a link or video to win best blog reader of the year.
5) request Valhalla to open.

Chatroulette is awesome

Over the weekend I discovered the greatest thing ever, Chatroulette. I guess it has been blowing up lately and fucking with people on it is awesome. It is basically a video/audio chat but it is random and you can next people. A few friends and I were on it the other day and to put it simply, it is amazing, especially when you are drunk. And its even better if you're baked. I have a program where I can change my webcam so I have a goofy background or like a cat face and some other crazy shit and people's reactions are priceless. Last night I had on the cat face and underneath I wrote "You must be trippin'" and the dude freaked out and then held up a massive bong. The only thing is once and a while you see some fucked up shit that may or may not haunt you forever.

In other news that kid who made the "Party at UNH" is at it again. This time it is an original and plans on releasing his album for free download in March. I got an email explaining how "Valhalla" writes, makes his own beats and records all his stuff in his dorm room. A while ago I tried starting a band with William Takefield, him on the guitar and me on my macbook garage band. It was so fucking hard even when we was sober that we gave up. So whether you like it or not you should give this kid some respect because making beats it way hard than you would think. I don't know this kid, but I have met other kid, Evin, who guest sings on this track and he was pretty chill, so I figured why not give them some publicity. Plus they contacted me so they obviously know this is the place to go for students to get the word out.
