UNH's Butler Captures Coveted Heisman Trophy

The NCAA and the Heisman Trophy Committee is proud to announce that Bobby Butler, formerly of the UNH men’s hockey team, has been named this year’s recipient of the Heisman Trophy. The Heisman Trophy is usually awarded every year to the best college football player, but Butler was best known for his accomplishments on the hockey rink. During Butler’s acceptance speech he said “I am very honored to receive such a prestigious award, but I am slightly confused since I never played college football. I mean I didn’t even play in high school.” The NCAA responded with this press release: “For the past four years Bobby Butler has been a terrific student-athlete at the University of New Hampshire. We understand that college hockey players usually do not qualify for the Heisman Trophy, seeing that it is designated for NCAA football players, but we wanted to reward his excellence with an award that most people have actually heard of. The Hobey Baker is a nice looking trophy and a terrific accomplishment, but very little people outside of New England or the Mid-West States have heard of it.” Butler, who recently signed a two-year contract with the Senators, looks forward to the day that the rest of the United States will follow college hockey. "I understand that we're not Canada," Butler said, "but maybe one day Americans will find joy in watching hockey more often than every four years when we get a chance to show Canada up at their own game. I mean, I won the Heisman Trophy, so at least that is a start." After Butler's press conference the NCAA announced that Chris Weinke was stripped of his Heisman Trophy from 2000 and it would be re-awarded to Keanu Reeves for his role as a quarterback in"The Replacements."
